Blakedown Landscapes were shortlisted for the BALI National Landscape Awards, 2010, for their recent work on the Nags Head Estate in East London.
The project included upgrading the existing drainage to enable the new hard-surfaced areas to drain. New electrical ducting was installed, along with new cabling for the installation of ornamental lamp columns and wall lights.
The raised grass areas to the central courtyard were constructed using blue-glazed bricks and oak sleepers. A new bike and bin store was built using London stock and blue-glazed bricks, and the walkway between the two was covered with ornamental metal framework.
Courtyard paving was constructed out of pavers and hot-rolled aggregate, which was used to outline the old air-raid shelters. This was complemented by areas of concrete paving and conservation setts.
Machine-turned timber posts and rails were constructed around the plant beds adjacent to the hard surfaces, along with a metal trip rail to the entrance beds. Along the front of the building, new ornamental rails, gates, screens and bespoke timber sleeper seats were installed.
Extensive soft landscaping, including semi-mature trees, new shrub beds and native hedging, was incorporated throughout the estate.
