An all-out fundraising effort by staff, pupils, parents, governors and alumni went into making the dream sports facilities at Tunbridge Wells Grammar School a reality. Kent County Council loaned the school the funds to cover the construction but, to keep costs down, all those involved in the school were invited to support the endeavour, making it a real community achievement.
Following a lengthy consultation with Kent County Council, Tunbridge Wells Borough Council, Sport England, the Football Association and the school community, it was decided that an all-weather, 3G synthetic pitch which would provide a full-sized football/rugby pitch or three five-a-side football pitches or was the best choice for the school.
The construction included fencing and floodlights, allowing the surface to be used for night-time matches and during the early dark winter months.
Furthermore, Blakedown constructed three new long-jump straights with landing pits and a 1400m² macadam car park.
It is hoped that the new facility will bring in revenue, which, in turn, will benefit the local community, so all in all the project should prove a welcome boost to school facilities.
