Shelfield Academy 3G & Macadam MUGA's

Blakedown Sport & Play have completed a full size 3G football pitch and 3 Macadam MUGA’s at Shelfield Academy.

The 104 × 71m 3G pitch was constructed using Tiger Turf Football 60 carpet and was lined for football and three 5-a-side.

The 3 macadam MUGA’s were lined for tennis & netball.

The entire project was completed with new heavy duty twin bar fencing and floodlights.

Five Islands School Multi Use Games Area

Blakedown Sport and Play have constructed two new multi use games areas at the new Five Islands School on the Isles of Scilly.

The first a sand dressed MUGA using a Desso Trophy carpet lined for hockey and tennis, the second a polymeric MUGA lined for netball & basketball.

All build materials and construction machinery for the project were sourced from the mainland then shipped from Penzance to St. Marys Island.

To ensure work was completed smoothly and efficiently Blakedown put 10-day shift patterns in place for all on-site staff working on the project which allowed the project to be completed in only 8 weeks.

The school was part of a £13m re-build project and was visited by the Queen & Prince Philip, the royals’ first visit to the Islands in 46 years.

Uxbridge College Multi Use Games Areas

Blakedown Sport & Play Ltd were employed to build two new multi use games areas at Uxbridge College.

The first was a 32m x 25m blue polymeric MUGA, lined for Tennis, Basketball & Netball.

The second a 3G surface using Tiger Turf Football synthetic carpet is lined for 5-a-side football.

Both areas were completed with surrounding and dividing fence.

Isleworth & Syon School 3G & Natural Pitch plus Cricket Wickets

A new full size 3G pitch lined for rugby, football & 5-a-side using Edel Touchdown 60mm carpet onto a dynamic base has been completed by Blakedown at Isleworth & Syon School.

Blakedown have also laid a new full size natural grass pitch which once taken will be lined and used for football, we are also maintaining this pitch for the school for a duration of 12 months.

A new drainage system has been constructed in both the 3G and the natural pitches

4 new Cricket wickets with cages & nets completed the works at the school

William Brookes School, Shropshire Pitch and track facilities

Blakedown Sport & Play have completed the sub-contract works in 3 phases of the William Brookes School development.

Phase 1 of the project involved the construction of a 101.5m x 63m sand-filled pitch using an Edel LSR 24mm carpet, with fencing and a new 200m polymeric 6 lane running track with an 8 lane sprint straight.

Phase 2 works saw the construction of a 75m x 35m macadam MUGA which was centrally divided by fencing to allow for 2 courts, both were lined for tennis & netball & one for basketball, this allows for maximum usage of the courts during lessons. Works started in November 2010 & were completed in February 2011.

A new natural rugby pitch was started in April 2011 will be ready for use in approximately September 2012 and completes the work for Phase 3

Paddington Road Recreation Ground Multi Use Games area & External Gym

Blakedown have constructed a new 25m x 16m multi use games area for Westminster City Council.

The tarmac surface was acrylic coated in green and lined for Basketball, Mini Tennis, Football and Volleyball.

A new external gym area with equipment was also constructed on a tarmac surface with a two tone green acrylic coated finish.

Fencing with goal recesses, basketball boards and hoops and 4 corner floodlights completed the project.

Barnes Junior School MUGA

Blakedown were employed to reconstruct and extend the school play ground by The London Borough of Richmond Upon Thames.

A new drainage systems was installed along with a soakaway.

The new surface was painted with an acrylic coating to form games areas.

A new disabled access ramp was also constructed with a brick retaining wall and metal hand rails.

Gordon's School Multi Use Games Area

Gordon’s School in Surrey chose Blakedown Sport & Play to construct a brand new synthetic multi use pitch and to resurface their two macadam tennis courts.

The school, close to our Blakedown Landscapes offices in Surrey wanted a fenced off, full sized sand-filled pitch suitable for football, hockey & tennis. The two existing macadam courts were resurfaced and acrylic coated with lines for tennis and netball. A ducting infrastructure has been put in place to allow floodlighting to be installed around the synthetic pitch at a later date.

Trevor Watson, Estate Bursar for the school commented “The project was well managed from start to finish, had it not been for the inclement weather just before Christmas the completion would have been 2-3 works earlier than expected! The whole school including students, PE staff and management are absolutely delighted with this long awaited pitch and I would personally like to thank Blakedown for their efforts in producing this first class facility”

Blackpool MUGAs (Multi-Use Games Areas)

Over the course of three years, Blackpool Borough Council employed Blakedown to install a number of new-build projects and carry out refurbishments at a variety of parks and schools.

The constructions included installing porous polymeric surface, fencing with recess goals and rebound boards and a range of different sports goals.

Completed sites include: Claremont Park, Roseacres School, Bispham Endowed School, St Mary’s School, Ancursholme School, Woodlands School, St George’s High School and Stanley School.

Brittons School, Essex Hockey and football pitch

Installation of a full-size, sand-filled pitch, lined for hockey and football, with recess goals for 11-a-side football and five-a-side. Also installed were floodlights and pitch nets, both on recess for security. This pitch was completed with 4m-high fencing and kickboards, which were covered in synthetic carpet to combat noise issues.

Attached to one side of the pitch, Blakedown installed a carpeted cricket wicket base, and at the bottom a floodlit, 3rd generation, five-a-side pitch with recess goals.

Cambridge Regional College Pitches

Blakedown recently completed a project for Marriott Construction at Cambridge Regional College.

The project was a new-build 935m2 sand-filled pitch with two recesses. The carpet used was an Edel PP 24mm, which was installed on top of a 15mm shockpad. Four floodlighting columns were also installed along with 3m-high perimeter fencing.

Chew Valley School, Bristol Sports pitch

Blakedown worked closely with Bath & North East Somerset Council to design and produce a full-size artificial multi-use sports pitch that will primarily be used for hockey and recreational soccer.

The construction entailed major earthworks, drainage, stone foundation and two tarmac layers. A 15mm shockpad, sand-filled carpet, fencing and 350 lux floodlighting system were all incorporated into the design.

Bill Chard, Chew Valley’s Project Manager, said: “All the hard work that has been done for so long, by so many people, is now coming to fruition. We are very pleased with the new All-Weather Pitch and the choice of Blakedown as our pitch contractor has proved to be a great success. Their experience and expertise has contributed significantly to the successful completion of this facility.”

Cowplain School, Hampshire Sports facilities

Installation of a 80m x 60m 3rd generation pitch with 3m-high fencing, floodlights and recess goals.

A macadam MUGA (Multi-Use Games Area) with four courts lined for basketball, tennis, netball and five-a-side football was also constructed. The MUGA was finished with five-a-side recess goals, fencing and floodlighting.

The project was part-funded by the Football Foundation.

Fairfield High School, Bristol Sports pitch

Fairfield High School asked Blakedown to construct new sports facilities at its Boiling Wells site.

This comprised installing a 10,500m2 artificial sports pitch with a 15mm in-situ shockpad and Edel PP 24mm sand-filled carpet.



The new sports facility included a full-size pitch, lined for hockey and football use, a 100m 8-lane athletics sprint straight, three five-a-side football pitches and three bay cricket wicket nets.

Linford Christie Outdoor Sports Centre, London Multi-sports

Chelsea FC star players John Terry and Shaun Wright-Phillips and England rugby World Cup hero Will Greenwood officially opened the sports facility that Blakedown Sport & Play constructed at the Linford Christie stadium.

This £600,000 facility, jointly funded by Barclays Spaces for Sports scheme and the Football Foundation, with backing from Hammersmith & Fulham Council, comprised a full-size, sand-filled, artificial sports pitch and four five-a-side pitches, all complete with fencing and floodlighting.

Peter Kenyon, Chief Executive of Chelsea Football Club said: “The Linford Christie Outdoor Sports Centre project is a great example of how clubs like Chelsea, sponsors, football bodies and the local council can come together as partners to benefit the community. Chelsea is totally committed to promoting sport and fitness and this new pitch will provide a much-needed multi-sports facility for the area.”

Parc-Y-Werin, Swansea New sports facilities

The construction of a new 32m x 32m sand-filled pitch with lines for football and tennis. The refurbishment of old existing tennis courts into a new 33.5m x 16.5m macadam multi-use games area was finished off with a sky-blue acrylic coating.

Both pitches were completed with two recess goals, 3m-high weldmesh fencing with 1.2m double weldmesh rebound boards, four-column floodlighting systems and perimeter tarmac footpaths.

Rayners Lane Estate, Harrow MUGA (Multi-Use Games Area)

Blakedown Sport & Play completed a sub-contract project for Inspace Partnerships at Rayners Lane Estate.

The works involved the construction of a porous macadam MUGA with green acrylic coating, and the installation of galvanised twin-bar fencing with integrated basketball posts, backboard and net, and two double gates.

Ryelands Estate, Lancaster Variety of sports facilities

The construction of a wide variety of sports facilities at Ryelands Estate.

This included:

• Installation of a 30m x 18m porous macadam multi-use games area for five-a-side football and basketball, with a 3m-high perimeter weldmesh fence and 1.2m rebound boards.
• A skatepark, including two 9m-diameter concrete bowls with grind rails.
• A junior play area with a pre-formed, safety-tiled surface with play equipment such as swings, a spring ride, spring seesaw, whirl and fun trial.
• The project was completed with tarmac footpaths, a vast amount of landscaping and planting of shrubs. The whole site was enclosed with 1.2m bowtop perimeter fencing.

The Oratory School, Reading MUGA (Multi-Use Games Area)

Reconstruction of the existing pitch at The Oratory School into a sand-filled MUGA.

The MUGA was surfaced using an Edel LSR carpet with inlaid lines for tennis. Lines for netball and a reduced-size hockey pitch were painted on. The MUGA was completed with new 3m-high weldmesh fencing with kickboards.

University of York Tennis courts

Blakedown Sport & Play were commissioned to resurface the University’s existing block of six tennis courts.

The courts were resurfaced with green acrylic-coated macadam with dark green surrounds. They were painted with white line markings for tennis and yellow markings for netball, and completed with new fencing.
