UCE Academy 3G & Tarmac MUGA

Blakedown Sport & Play have completed extensive sport facility work at the Brand new UCE Academy in Wirral.

A new full size 3G for football & 5-a-side was constructed onto a dynamic base using and Edel Superblade Duo 60mm monofilament carpet.

4m High weldmesh fencing and 6 floodlight columns completed the ATP.

A four court tarmac Multi-Use Games Area for tennis & Netball was built plus a polymeric long jump straight.

Numerous items of sporting apparatus were also supplied from weighted football & 5-a-side goals to pitch dividing nets & netball posts.

Once completed the pitch was used to break a Guinness World record for the largest man made poppy, formed with nearly 2000 students and teachers from the Academy.

Southbury Leisure Centre Double Pitch resurface

Blakedown Sport & Play were employed by Enfield Council to resurface the two full size artificial pitches at Southbury Leisure Centre.

Both existing pitches were sand-filled, pitch 1 was replaced with a new high quality sand-filled carpet – Edel Elite LSR 24mm and lined for hockey, 5-a-side and tennis. Upon lifting the old carpet and inspecting the shockpad extensive repairs were carried out prior to laying the new carpet to bring the playing characteristics of the pitch to a high performance.

Pitch 2 was resurfaced using the top-spec 3G Edel Superblade Duo 40mm and lined for football, hockey and 5-a-side again the shockpad was inspected and found to be in good order.
Once completed the pitch was tested to FIH and FIFA standards.

Remedial repairs to the weldmesh fence surrounding both pitches were also carried out.

Cowlairs Development Trust MUGA

The area of land chosen by the West of Scotland Housing Association was a small, steeply sloped area, enclosed by tenement housing buildings with restricted access. The land had been left unused, accumulating rubbish, with areas classed as contaminated land requiring specialist disposal techniques.

Due to the area being on a steep slope a balanced cut & fill was carried out to provide a flat & stable platform on which to construct the MUGA and play park areas. A retaining wall was installed along one side due to the confines of the site and difference in heights of the surrounding areas.

A lateral & perimeter drainage system was installed flowing into a newly constructed soak-away. The prepared formation was built up and strengthened with new clean foundation stone. A perimeter edging with mowing margin was installed and a macadam finished playing surface was laid and finished off with sports playing lines.

Due to the location of the MUGA a heavy duty sports re-bound fence was installed with two goal recesses & two basketball backboards incorporated into the system along with a cranked top.

The surrounding areas were made up of macadam access paths, a separate basketball shooting area with back board & topsoil with a newly turfed playing area. The slopes surrounding the facility were graded & turfed to provide an aesthetic finish on hand over. The turfed areas of the facility were enclosed using a hit & miss timber post & rail system enhanced to withstand the stresses of misuse common with play parks.’

Cambridge University Hockey Pitch resurface

Blakedown Sport & Play have completed extensive refurbishment and resurface works to the hockey pitch at Cambridge University.

Prior to the new surface being laid remedial repairs were made to the tarmac sub-base then a new shockpad was installed.

The existing worn carpet was replaced with the high-spec Edel Triple T Sand-Dressed carpet with blue run-offs.

To bring it up to playing standard repairs works were also carried out to the existing surrounding fence.

Taverham Recreational Facilities Hockey Pitch & BMX Track

Blakedown Sport & Play have completed a brand new full size hockey pitch and BMX Track for Taverham Recreational Facilities.

The pitch is built onto an engineered base with 15mm in-situ shockpad and uses the latest H2° carpet from Edel.

This cost effective and environmentally sound carpet gives the playing characteristics of a water based system but without the need for a water infill.

Galvanised weldmesh facing with kickboards was installed along with 8 × 15m high floodlights.

This high class facility will be used by Taverham High School and Norwich City Hockey Club.

Finally a BMX track was built alongside the pitch using tarmac and gravel, a surrounding fenced was installed and associated landscaping to the whole area completed the project.

Southgate Hockey Club Double Pitch Resurface

Blakedown Sport & Play are very proud to have been involved with the refurbishment of the two existing pitches at Southgate Hockey Club in Hertfordshire.

The high specification Edel Triple-T carpet was chosen for both the water-based and sand-dressed pitches which offers a high ball speed with good grip and low friction, ideal for competition level hockey.

The Edel Triple T Global standard water-based pitch also had the in-situ rubber shockpad replaced so providing the best playing characteristics possible. New kerbs and drainage channels were also constructed around the pitch.

The second worn sand-filled pitch was replaced with the Edel Triple T sand-dressed option, providing a multi-use facility so as the club can continue to hire out to local football clubs and teams.

Blakedown utilised their in-house skills with a design and build scheme for the surrounding pitch areas which included recycling the existing carpet around the club for spectator areas and walkways, and installing high specification paving and decking areas around the clubhouse.

Loughbrough University 3G MUGA

Blakedown Sport & Play were tasked with the construction of the 34.75 × 17m 3G Multi Use games area for volleyball & 5-a-side at Loughborough University.

Extensive cut and fill works with a retaining wall were required on land adjacent to the existing full size artificial pitch. A tarmac surrounding path and landscaped banks completed the groundwork’s.

Once a level area was achieved drainage channels were constructed then the engineered base layer laid. A 45mm Edel Superblade 3G carpet was installed with playing lines for 5-a-side and volleyball.

The perimeter 1.2m high surrounding twin bar fence with 3m high goal recess ends is painted in the University corporate purple – Pantone 269c

4 corner single lamp head floodlights, purple spectator benches and retractable dividing nets completed the project.

Woodchurch High School 3G Football Pitch

Blakedown Sport & Play have constructed a 106 × 71m 3G pitch and a natural turf training area all within a landscaped setting at Woodchurch High School for Wirral Council.

The groundwork’s element of the project done through the winter provided a challenge, with the excavation of up to 2.5m of loosely placed fill, the removal of a buried topsoil layer and the subsequent replacement, compaction and levels to new falls of the full material.

The synthetic grass carpet used was the Edel Superblade Duo suitable laid onto a Dynamic stone base.

A 200 lux 8 column floodlighting system was installed, with switches for training and half pitch options.

3m high “twin bar 868” fencing system was installed around the perimeter, with 5m goal ends.

Goals Chester 3G 5-a-side Centre

Blakedown Sport & Play completed construction of a new Goals Soccer Centre in Chester.

The extensive works included 3G 5-a-side and 7-a-side pitches, a modular building, car park and landscaping.

Prior to construction Blakedown’s in-house workforce carried out groundworks, built the foundations and drainage infrastructure, the team along with a specialist modular building contractor then erected the building.

Blakedown also oversaw the complete M&E works.

The access road into the new facility was constructed and a new car park with landscaping which included trees, shrubs and turfing.

Footpaths, cycle stands and street lighting completed the external works for the new facility.

The 6 new 5-a-side and 1 new 7-a-side pitches were finished with sturdy twin bar weld mesh fencing, gates and kickboards plus overhead netting.

Floodlights were installed to make this top class facility available at any time of day all year round.
