Halliwick Recreation Ground Recognised for Sustainable Delivery

Blakedown Landscapes is proud to have been shortlisted at the 2025 Pro Landscaper Sustainability & Biodiversity Awards in the Commercial Build Project category for Halliwick Recreation Ground.

The first sustainable urban drainage (SuDS) project in the London Borough of Barnet, Halliwick delivers significant environmental and community benefits. Designed to address the impacts of climate change, the scheme mitigates flood risk across the Muswell Hill Critical Drainage Area, enhances biodiversity and creates an inclusive public space.

At its centre is a detention basin and wetland system that manages surface water runoff from surrounding roads and open space, easing pressure on the Thames Water network and protecting nearby homes, schools and infrastructure. Shallow swales, new wetlands planted with reeds and marginal species, and native wildflower meadows now provide a rich habitat for wildlife.

Excavated material from the basin was reused on site to form landforms within the park, eliminating waste and reducing vehicle movements. Mature tree trunks from local sources were incorporated as natural play and landscape features, while recycled composite decking was used for the wetland viewing terrace.

The scheme has already proven its effectiveness, successfully managing heavy rainfall events and providing a valuable community resource. Its recognition at the awards highlights the collaborative work of Barnet Council, LUC, Metis Consultants and Blakedown Landscapes in delivering a resilient landscape that brings long-term benefit to both people and the environment.
