The Mediterranean Garden Featured in June's Pro Landscaper

Blakedown Landscapes is delighted to see the Mediterranean Garden at Beningbrough Hall featured in the latest edition of Pro Landscaper.

Commissioned by the National Trust and designed by Andy Sturgeon, the Mediterranean Garden forms part of a long-term vision to enhance and reimagine the historic landscape surrounding Beningbrough Hall in North Yorkshire. Delivered by Blakedown, the project transformed a previously underused area into a distinctive garden inspired by Mediterranean landscapes and adapted for a changing climate.

The feature explores the construction challenges behind the finished landscape, including extensive earthworks, drainage infrastructure, dry stone walling, water feature installation and the integration of new landscape elements within a sensitive heritage setting. The project was delivered under particularly challenging conditions, with archaeological discoveries, restricted site access through protected woodland and prolonged periods of severe weather all requiring careful planning and close collaboration between the project team.

Beneath the winding paths, sculpted landforms, stone walls and water features lies a significant programme of drainage and engineering works designed to ensure the long-term performance and resilience of the garden. These hidden elements are fundamental to supporting the landscape as it matures and adapts to future climatic conditions.

The Mediterranean Garden was recognised with a Principal Award at the 2025 BALI National Landscape Awards, acknowledging the collaboration, skill and dedication of the entire project team.
